The Guildwood Butterflyway Project is a volunteer project of the David Suzuki Foundation, started by a group of enthusiastic native plant gardeners and monarch butterfly supporters in the community of Guildwood in south east Toronto in 2018.

Our Mission

Guildwood is a beautiful “village” within the city of Toronto, located in south east Scarborough, atop the Scarborough Bluffs on the edge of the Carolinian Zone. The Bluffs are an important stopping point on the migratory routes of birds and butterflies, including the endangered Monarch butterfly. With the impacts of chemicals, urbanization and climate change over the last 50 years, biodiversity along the waterfront and in the city (and, let’s face it, everywhere) is in trouble. Without a concerted effort to change the way we garden, the future of our native habitat is dim.

We are dedicated to educating gardeners about the importance of native plants and organic gardening practices in the restoration of biodiversity to support birds, insects and other wildlife. We call this “gardening with purpose”. When you approach your garden with a view to creating not only beauty, but a beautiful garden that also provides shelter, support and habitat, you are gardening with a higher purpose in mind.

Education and Outreach

We attend and host community events, manage local restoration projects (our goal is to get rid of lawns!) and hold native plant sales (and the occasional giveaway!) in Guildwood. Check our upcoming events and come out to talk to us about what you can do to create a healthy habitat in your own garden.

All funds raised go back into the community through gifts of native plants to non-profits, schools and churches. Over the last few years we have seeded a landslide area on the waterfront along the Scarborough Bluffs with wildflower seeds to restore the vegetation that has been lost. We have donated and planted canoes with native wildflowers to honour Toronto’s lost rivers and indigenous history at schools and non-profits in the area, and held plant giveaways at community events.
